163rd Circular Mail

Dear Friends,

The email from former STC chorister Eddie Appathurai, as forwarded below, is an urgent attempt to obtain missing contact details for the listed former STC choristers and servers of the Yin era (1947-1962) and names of others (including yours) if not already on the list. The purpose is to enable the organising committee to send them all invitations to attend, with full details of, the forthcoming inaugural reunion, to be held on the weekend of 5 & 6 March 2016, of all former STC choristers and servers, but especially those from the Yin era. Your kind assistance is requested, please, in adding the missing information against the names on the list. Please also add any unlisted names of other choristers and servers of the Yin era known to you, with their current contact details too. Please feel free to forward a copy of this email to your Old Thomian friends around the world. Also please note that this event is to be held on the weekend prior to the annual Royal-Thomian cricket match which is scheduled for Thursday 10 to Saturday 12 March 2016.

Eddie is on the Warden’s organising committee for this event, which will be highlighted by a special inaugural service of Music, Lessons and Prayers for Passiontide to Easter, to be held in the STC Chapel of the Transfiguration on Sunday 6th March 2016, in commemoration of the late Revd. Canon Roy Henry Bowyer-Yin, former STC Chaplain, Choirmaster and teacher. Of course, all members of the wider Thomian community, their families and friends are most welcome to attend this service which the Warden and his committee are very enthusiastic about as evident from the considerable time and effort the very busy Warden has expended in wholeheartedly supporting this special service and the reunion. Hoping you will be there too!

Please send your reply to me, if possible by 30th November 2015, for co-ordination and forwarding by me to Eddie in Colombo.

Many thanks in anticipation of your kind co-operation and assistance. Esto Perpetua!

Kind regards best wishes!

Roger

Subject: Please acknowledge re March 6th Special Evensong at the Chapel

As some of you are already aware the Special evening service to remember Father Yin will be held in the Chapel.

I would appreciate if you can look at the list attached and add any missing names and also fill up the contact info if you can.

What I need to know is how many of you will attend and how many of you are willing to join the Old Choristers who will sing alongside the present Thomian choir. This would require your coming for some choir practises.
The warden requests that the ex choristers only be from those who sang during the RHBY era (1947 to 1962)

Thanks and would appreciate your early response

156th Circular Mail

Dear Fellow Thomians;

As you are aware the STC OBA is celebrating 130 years of meaningful existence in the year 2016. It is perhaps the oldest alumni association in the world with a recorded/documented history. The OBA has lined up a series of events to commemorate this important milestone in life of the OBA. The celebrations are due to begin with the "Thomian Walkathon 2015" scheduled to be held on Saturday, 7th November 2015.

The Annual Report of the OBA, due to be released for the 130th AGM scheduled to be held in February 2016, will carry a few/selected articles of Old Boys. Hence, all Old Boys are hereby invited to indicate their willingness to contribute articles to be published (upon selection) in the said Annual Report. Please be kind enough to revert back to us with details/outline of the article/s you wish to contribute to the Annual Report.

I have no doubt that Old Boys would have numerous memories of life at the 'school by the sea', big match experiences and other memorable events regarding which they could pen a few paragraphs to be published in the Annual Report. Please communicate your willingness to contribute an article for the Annual Report on or before 23rd August 2015.

Your support and assistance in this regard is much appreciated.

Thank you,
Yours sincerely,

Dear Fellow Thomians,

Here is a Link to the Photos of the Award of the “LESLIE DE SARAM MEMORIAL PRIZE taken at the Guru Prize Giving on August 08, 2015. ( https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0BzpNX7bIUN9ffmhQY2V3MWIxcXlRaDloc01wX3BYZXJBajIwVzByb3VndWwtai1qTF9qLW8&usp=sharing )

Also attached herewith the Citation for the  “Leslie De Saram Memorial Prize”.

A novel feature  was that the recipient of  this Award received an Emotional  Standing  Ovation  from  the entire gathering including all those on the Stage ,when he came up to receive the Prize after   the citation was read out.

Perhaps the fact that Leslie de Saram’s Gift means so much to Guru had been forgotten and  reminding the Audience  the History behind the establishment and continuation  of the College evoked the sentiments.

149th Circular Mail

Dear Fellow Thomians;
It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing away of Mr. Lasantha Perera, better known as L.S., on Monday morning after a brief illness.
The Late Mr. Perera opened batting for College in 1962, 1963 and 1964 and was the Vice Captain of the College First XI Team in the year 1964 under the Captaincy of the Late Mr. Premalal Goonesekera. It is with gratitude the contemporaries of the Late Mr. Perera remember the pivotal role played by him in the STC Victory in the Battle of the Blues in the year 1964.
The Late Mr. Perera, whilst in UK in the late 1960's, was actively engaged in UK Chapter of the STC OBA, when he served as President for 3 years and a Committee Member for several years. His contribution to the needs of College was much appreciated by the Past Wardens.
The remains of the Late Mr. Perera will lie at the A F Raymonds Funeral Parlor from 12.00 noon Friday, 26th June 2015.
Cremation will take place on Saturday, 27th June 2015 at 5.00 pm at the General Cemetery, Borella . Prior to the Cremation, the remains of the Late Mr. Perera will be taken to the Chapel of the Transfiguration on Saturday, 27th June 2015 at 3.00 pm for a Service of Thanksgiving.

131st Circular Mail

EULOGY FOR P S DULEEPKUMAR

It is a privilege for me to speak on this sad occasion, on behalf of the many relatives and friends of Duleep, in which we commemorate and celebrate his many – splendored life of over 83 years.

I do so, with great sadness as a friend and colleague of Duleep of over 70 years. We grew up together and shared our lives in the place we called our home – Gurutalawa, - a place which is also home to so many of you gathered here this evening to honour him. We not only lived those most important years – growing up together as brothers – in that unforgettable setting for a school, but also had our first paid jobs as amateur teachers, at Gurutalawa under those legends Dr Hayman and Father Foster.

For many years thereafter, until age intervened, Duleep took a deep, personal and unrivalled interest in all the manifold aspects of the life of the school. For many of us, whom the School had nurtured, the interest was real, but only spasmodic. For Duleep, like in anything else he did, it was complete, constant and totally committed.

He saw Gurutalawa as the crucible in which the uncreated conscience of our spirits was forged.

In the early forties, we were its Chariots of Fire, training for the Big Race of Life. We were the Pioneers in a new land of endless opportunity.

Duleep had a deep love of learning. Every day was a new adventure filled with new information and knowledge to be absorbed – whether it was intellectual, artistic or physical.  In many ways he was the real authentic Renaissance man among us.

He took this passion for learning, to the young men whom he had the privilege to guide as a teacher. The moving tribute that Chandran Rutnam paid him in “To Sir with Love” reflects the powerful impact Duleep made on the spirit and minds of the young wards in his charge.

He carried this same spirit of curiosity and learning into his professional life as a high official in the Inland Revenue and in later life as a much sought after Tax Consultant. Much of his service was rendered gratis- at no charge.

Many wondered why he never married unlike many of his friends.  In his usual manner, and he had a wonderful sense of humour – he would say he was married to so many things like the School and Work that he had no time for a wife. But the real reason was that he wanted to look after his mother who had done so much for him. He literally gave his life to look after her. And it was wonderful to see the bond between them, and his twin brother Shanti (20 mins) ahead at birth and most of the time, as long as he Shanti lived.

They were inseparable and matched each other. One was just as good as the other.

His last years were painful, mentally more than physically as he took on himself the sad plight of what was happening of his people – the Tamil people – in the North and East.

He had great faith in Anglican Christianity and practiced it devotedly but never flaunted it. He read widely, was a wonderful speaker and wrote like an angel.

We celebrate his life but mourn his passing, as a warm and compassionate friend. He was a loyal Thomian – staunch and true; a worthy Sri Lankan and as a living legend of our times.

In many ways his passing marks the end of an era. We shall not see the like of him again.

May he rest in peace.

Dear members of the STCG 62 group and my former pupils
I'm forwarding an appeal made by Mrs Malathi Nesiah, wife of late Mr Lanka Nesiah. Both Lanka and I started our careers at Guru and both of us have taught all of you. The appeal by his wife is for a very worthy cause to establish a scholarship to a student in memory of Lanka. Both of us, though we parted in different directions, always had fond memories of our days at Guru and reminisced on those days whenever we met. I appeal to all our former students  to make a contribution to this worthy cause in memory of your late former teacher.
With very best wishes to all

To: Lanka Nesiah <lmnesiah@gmail.com>

Dear Family and Friends,

When Lanka passed away, too soon, last August, we wanted to celebrate his remarkable life in a permanent way. Among the many emails we received, were emails from people who  remembered Lanka as kind teacher in his first employment in 1960, awaiting University  entrance, at S. Thomas’
Gurutalawa.

S. Thomas’ Gurutalawa is a boys school situated in the south-eastern edge of the hill country in Sri Lanka. It has a lower and upper school.  Currently there are 602 students on the roll of which 450 are boarders.  The school has capacity for another 75 boarders and 75 day-scholars. The
demographics of the school are 58% Buddhist, 20% Muslim, 15% Christian and 7% Hindu. It costs Sri Lankan Rupees 40,000 per boarder per term and  SLRs 5,000 per day-scholar per term. This figure includes fees, books, materials and sports but not uniform, clothes or pocket money.

We have set up a fund, administered by the Incorporated Trustees of the Church of Ceylon. An investment of SLRs 1,200,000 will provide one boarder scholarship that we would like to give a student from a remote area. It is our wish that we will also be able to provide for two day-scholars from the local area.

We are touched by the many generous contributions towards our quest. However, we are short of our target to provide for the first student and are therefore now writing to you if you would like to be part of this project. If you would, could we please ask you send a cheque made out
to the account payee (details below) and post it to Nagulan Nesiah (address below) or Sangeetha Nesiah (address below) or by bank transfer (details below).

Name of Account : The Incorporated Trustees of the Church of Ceylon

Account No     : 01-6063268-01

Name of Bank  : Standard Chartered Bank

Branch                : Wellawatte

Swift Code       : SCBLLKLX (Col)

We would appreciate your pledges by July so that we can proceed with the application process to be able to commence the scholarship at the beginning of the school year in January 2015.

Thank you so much you support and please be assured that we are moving on and learning to cherish the lovely memories we all have.

115th Circular Mail

September 13, 2013

A little bit of everything from The 18th Warden of S. Thomas’

Prof. Indra De Soysa
- by Mevan Peiris

Hailing from a prestigious lineage of aristocracy, the 18th warden of S. Thomas’ college Mount Lavinia is not known to mince his words. An intellectual in the true essence of the word, his academic rigour added with his sporting past puts forth the result of a special kind.

More than half of the city of Moratuwa is named after the De Zoysas and Indra has the honour of being the great grandson of the man who was Ceylon’s richest in the late 1800s, whose statue today, is the centre of De Soysa circus overlooking the sea of shoppers at ODEL.

A talented table tennis player in his youth, a brilliant academic whose work has been acclaimed in his field of work he is also a very able manager who overlooks one of the most difficult administrative operations that one could think of. This ruggedly handsome Professor has already made his mark within the two years he has occupied the Warden’s office as - ‘the smiling warden’.

Young Indra De Soysa was an average student who was involved in a lot of sports during his time at College. He played Table Tennis very seriously and in fact was the Junior National Champion in 1980. Due to the fact that he was living down Hotel road, Indra was able to engage in Cricket, Rugby and Swimming in the junior age groups and spent much of his leisure time within the school premises. He describes his school days as a time when the entire island was going through one of its worst phases ever.

After seven years of the Sirimavo Bandaranaike regime where import substitutions were imposed together with inward looking national policies, the education system of the country had also degenerated greatly. This was the time that the hallowed quadrangle on which only the staff and prefects are allowed to cross through while school is in session, was used as a mere patch of vegetation to grow manioc and sweet potatoes

However, the light at the end of the tunnel for Indra and his batch mates came in the form of the Sub Warden at the time. Professor Rajiva Wijesinghe, while being one the youngest to hold the office of Sub Warden in the history of the school was apparently a great inspiration and asset to the students.

“He came from Oxford, and started walking into classrooms unimpressed by the fact that there was a lack of teachers at the time. He sometimes taught subjects whenever he was free, he gave us books from his own library and finally there was someone who saw the potential in the students and was very interested in harnessing it. That was our lucky card”.

During this time people like Richard De Soyza were brought in to conduct classes and Indra says that it was a privilege and a huge excitement at the same time to be learning from individuals of that calibre.

Apart from trivial rays of hope the situation in the country as a whole had worsened with time and it is no surprise then, that after completing his advanced levels during the times of the ’83 riots, Indra had a clear ambition to leave the country in pursuit of higher education and greener pastures.

In hindsight, Indra believes that the war which erupted during his last years in Sri Lanka had a huge bearing in shaping his ambitions and his chosen fields of study. Opting to follow Political Science for his first degree and then following on with a Masters in International Relations, Indra finally wrote a thesis on International Political Economy. His academic career was an illustrious one and he gives much of the credit to the support received from his professors and superiors. Indra was also lucky to be one of the twelve PhD students from around the world to receive the United Nations Scholarship to be a part of the PhD Fellowship in Japan. This gave him an opportunity to interact with the brightest international students from around the world who were highly intelligent and insightful.

During this time Indra was writing a paper on the effects of foreign investment on economic and political development, while having the luxury of utilizing the United Nations databases and other UNCTAD resources. This was later published as a book titled ‘Foreign Direct Investment, Democracy and Development’.

After returning from Japan and completing his PhD, Indra considers it a very lucky coincidence that he was offered employment at the Peace Research Institute in Oslo, Norway which was also the home country of his wife Ann Kristin. This was an ideal occurrence at the ideal time since the PRIO was a prestigious workplace for a young grad student emerging from College and simultaneously the peace process in Sri Lanka was in the pipelines which gave this a personal touch. As Indra puts it in his own words “this was a double bonus”.

Two years later, Indra and his wife had their second child and at the same time he was offered a position to lecture at the University of Bond. There were almost no hesitations since teaching was one of his passions and he found that working for a research institution had its drawbacks in terms of being autonomous. He thoroughly enjoyed his time at the University since he had ample free time to research on self decided topics while carrying out his teaching duties. It was during this time that Indra De Soysa added the prefix to his name “Professor”.

Five years after reaching this pinnacle in his academic career and after many more publications and teaching, Professor De Soysa was invited to join the prestigious Royal Norwegian Society in Sciences and Letters. In the year 2010, after the end of the armed conflict back at home, the idea of returning to Sri Lanka had not only grown but looked a very feasible option for the professor and his family. When the vacancy for the post of Warden arose, Indra applied gladly but void of expectations and claims to be honoured to have been offered the position.

Sharing some of his expertise in his field of specialization, Professor Indra says that he had closely followed the conflict situation in Sri Lanka and had been profusely outspoken regarding the Norwegian mediatory involvement in the peace process..

“There are several BBC interviews in which I share my thoughts about the situation and I wrote to the newspapers as well as engaging in public debate. Lot of LTTE forums that I had to duck from getting hammered!” remarks Indra with a chuckle. He also recalls a very heated debate with Mr. Vaiko during his time in Oslo.

The professor in his academic papers on conflict rejects the claim that there is anything ‘ethnic’ in a conflict. His criticisms were not loosely based or influenced by any of his personal sentiments, but were deeply rooted in theoretical and empirical academic study.

“People do not fight for large grievances but it is only private gain that drives conflict. Within this setup expecting democracy from Prabhakaran was a no-starter. Unless you put constraints on the flow of weapons and funding for war there was no way to stop it”.

Continuing further he says that as an academic who was specializing in conflict this so called ‘peace process’ was defeating its purpose. He says that the collective action of people who were affected needed to be addressed rather than trying to bring the government and terrorists to a common platform.

“Karuna didn’t break away from the LTTE because the Norwegians facilitated it. I used to always say that we didn’t need you to make peace with Karuna, in fact we don’t need you if the two sides want to really make peace, we would’ve made peace already!”

This is seen by Professor Indra as a common misconception shared around the world in issues relating to conflict. “Understand what makes rebellion feasible. Understand that people who head rebellions are not great lovers of democracy – they just want power. So building schools in Afghanistan is good if it is for educational purposes, but it is not going to end conflict. It’s just another target for the rebels”

Furthermore, Professor De Soysa criticizes the naive sense of implementing justice and says that it is far deeper than what can be seen on the surface.
“Don’t assume that where there is no conflict there is absolute justice. People suffer in silence”.

Professor De Soysa is seen by many as a very successful academic and was recently invited to make a public lecture at the Kadiragamar Institute for International Relations and Strategic Studies. Furthermore he seems to be on the right track of being a successful warden as well looking back at the several observable developments in the College during his tenure so far. This is most aptly exemplified by the recent ‘revival’ that the Thomians have had in terms of sports. But the Warden says that education should be at the top of the priority list of the school and goes on to say that he hopes to achieve this not at the compromise of sports or other character building extracurricular activities but as a wholesome attainment

Dear Friends,

Further to our email yesterday, the body of Lanka Nesiah is laying in state at W.Sherry Funeral Home, 87 Greenford Avenue, Hanwell, W7 1HA.  A public viewing has been arranged from 4-5pm on Thursday, 15 August 2013.   A private service of cremation for immediate family will be held the next day.

The funeral service will be at 6pm on 24 August 2013 at the Chapel of Transfiguration, S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, Sri Lanka.  A private service of the burial of ashes will be held in Jaffna later in the month.

Dear Friends,

A few hours ago, at 3pm local time, Appa passed away in the Oncology ward at Charring Cross Hospital in London.   He was admitted 5 days ago, when he suddenly needed more intensive nursing care.  Until that time, Appa (and Amma) were living with, and under the care of Sangeetha and family in Ealing.

We regret that you are receiving this mass email but we do not have the strength to communicate this sad news to you individually and privately, as we would ideally have liked to do.  We also are not able to offer the courtesy, in this short term, of responding to your emails and returning your phone calls.  We rest assured of your generous thoughts and prayers since Appa was diagnosed with lung cancer in October, but particularly during the last few weeks when Appa’s condition rapidly deteriorated, and during the next few difficult weeks as we figure out life without him.

As you all know, Appa fought hard over the past 10 months and continued to live his life with vigor and joy.   He was our source of strength until this last day.  But in the end, since we learned of the metastases to the brain in mid-July, the fuel to fight began to run out.  We like to think that Appa didn’t give up, but that, in his signature style of thinking of the rest of us, decided to leave us with the happier memories.

As per his wishes, Appa will be cremated here in London, and we anticipate having his funeral at the S. Thomas’ Chapel in Mount Lavinia sometime before the end of August.  We shall keep you updated.
We thank you for your support.

Love,
Sangeetha & Nagulan (on behalf of Amma as well)

110th Circular Mail

July 18, 2013

Dear All,

FYI.

LJ

Dear Mr. Jayatilaka,

The exco met last Saturday for the 4th meeting for this year and approved the new website and the online membership system and we have made the new sites live yesterday,

This replaces the site done by Vinod with a easy to update site which has a content management system. I hope this will make it easy for the future exco members to keep an up to date website.

The new website is on the same url : www.stcgoba.com

Under gallery of events you will see the photos from the family outing and the Annual Prize Giving ceremony and I will supply you with the same photos for your website.

The membership system can be viewed via the membership directory link on the navigation. Please note that we are still inputting the details of members so some of the members may not see their details yet. And we are using the membership directory which was published in 2009 so the details are outdated. But the system allows you to fill in a form and send us the correct details so with time we will have an uptodate directory. Once the requests are received the Exco will verify and update the system (and the register hard copy).

direct link to the membership directory. http://members.stcgoba.com We only have added 161 as of last night. and may take some time to load all members.

Those members with valid email addresses on the 2009 directory will receive an email when their details are added or updated. Please pass this message to your mailing list as there are no email addresses listed for most members (2009 directory) and some have bounced back as they are no longer valid addresses. (those email addresses that bounce back are removed from the directory to avoid further emails being sent to the same)

Regards,

Muditha

  1. Very often the question is posed “ What are these  Thomian Traditions (and Grit ) that are spoken of and boasted about ”? . For the benefit and enlightenment of those who need some clarification, we reproduce below an Extract of a Speech made by Mr.P S Duleepkumar as Chief Guest at the Prize Giving of S.Thomas’ College, at Gurutalawa on 13th August 1977., which may be of some relevance.

“Patriotism and national mindedness does not lie in conformity not yet does change demand the abandonment of tradition. In S. Thomas’ we have a great tradition which this year goes back 125 years and I would like this opportunity to articulate briefly, particularly to the boys of the school, some ingredients that contribute to its totality.
Firstly, we believe in the equality of everyone. In S. Thomas’ a boy is not judged by his religion, race, caste, or class. Boys in school are either good chaps or bad chaps
and furthermore, it has always been recognized that there is some good in even the worst of us.

Secondly, we learn to share. Naturally, some boys are richer than others. When I was in school the official pocket money per boy was always -/50 cts. a week and those boys who were more affluent than others were taught and learnt to share without any patronage on the part of the giver or obligation on the part of the receiver. No one went to the tuck shop alone and if anyone dared to do so he received the undisguised opprobrium of his fellows.
Thirdly, we were taught to respect and honor our opponents. In school matches there was no hooting or jeering of the other side. We were allowed only to cheer what
was good on both sides. The game was the thing and let the best team win.
Fourthly, it was expected of us to be magnanimous and generous in victory but also courageous and unbowed in defeat. If excuses were ever made, it would be the
winners who would find them for the losers and no winner won more encomiums than a loser for his pluck.
Fifthly, we were made to respect authority. This had many facets to it. It meant respect not merely for our parents and teachers, but respect also for any one who was
older. If authority was flouted it was never from disrespect but for daring. Punishment was borne without bitterness and taken like a man. There was no place for squealers and no higher authority was ever brought to bear on the authority within the school itself.
Sixthly, we were taught never to throw in the towel. Never to give up and always to run a race however far down the field one was, to the end. The word “Grit” became
synonymous with S. Thomas’. And finally, of many more precepts of conduct and behavior the one that stands out in my mind was the constant injunction to stand up for
the underdog.”

Your comments and observations are most welcome.

Here's a link to a video presentation made by two school boys. (I was very impressed by the work and the way they handled the equipment) I managed to copy the file but due to the size limit on my memory card, the lads kindly reduced the file size of the video. (but that reduced the video quality)
